A love
letter

service
industry.
— WHO WE ARE
"Habitat has always been more than just a coffee shop. It is the result of a belief that we can — even in a small corner of the inner city Philadelphia — choose to live differently."
We are Habitat.
It started with one phrase.
Habitat Coffee was built on a simple belief: when the shop wins, we all win.
Our founder, Aaron, started his career in the kitchen of a fast food restaurant — and somewhere in that work, he found something he couldn't let go of. The idea that serving people well, with genuine care, wasn't just a nice thing to do. It was a calling. And he wanted to dedicate his career to it.
Habitat is his answer to that calling. A neighborhood coffee shop in Philadelphia's inner city, built as a deliberate counter-story to the dominant narrative of our culture — the one that says there isn't enough to go around, so hold tightly to what you have.
We believe the opposite. That our flourishing is tied to our neighbors' flourishing. That a small coffee shop on a corner of the Gayborhood can choose to loosen its grip, give of itself, and believe something better is possible.
Every cup of coffee, every conversation, every act of small kindness across the counter — that's what Habitat is made of.
Not just a coffee shop. A shared table. A neighborhood rhythm. A refusal to be soulless.
“When the shop wins, we all win.”
— Aaron Beattie, Founder of Habitat CoffeeWHAT WE’RE BUILT ON
Three things we deeply believe.
01
Hospitality is generous, not transactional.
Coffee shouldn't be snobby, soulless, or built on scarcity. Every guest — whether you're a daily regular, a curious first-timer, or someone who just needs a good cup at 6am — deserves to feel seen and served well.
02
Excellent coffee and good people aren't a tradeoff.
Most places make you choose. We don't. Our baristas are highly trained and our coffee is third-wave specialty — but you'll never feel judged for not knowing the difference between washed and natural process.
03
The people behind the counter matter too.
Habitat is a love letter to the service industry and the people in it. That means caring for our team the same way we care for our guests. When our team thrives, our guests feel it. It's not complicated — it just takes intention.
Our Team — the people who make it real.
Habitat is a reflection of all the people in it — the care, the pursuit of excellence, the inevitable imperfections, the hard work, the patience, and the small kindnesses that happen on both sides of the counter.
Aaron Beattie
Aaron built Habitat out of a deep belief that the service industry deserves better — better care, better culture, better coffee. He started behind the counter and now spends his time building the conditions for everyone else to do their best work.
Founder & OWNER
Chris Witmer
Chris has grown into one of the key architects of Habitat's day-to-day culture — building structure, deepening care, and raising the bar for what it means to run a truly well-organized, people-first coffee shop. His leadership makes Habitat better than any single person could accomplish alone.
General ManagerOur Baristas
Every barista at Habitat is trained not just to make excellent coffee, but to genuinely care about the people in front of them. They remember names. They help you find what you love. They show up — for each other and for you — every single day. They are what makes Habitat, Habitat.
The whole teamA corner of Philadelphia's Gayborhood.
We're rooted in Philadelphia's center city — a neighborhood that knows something about showing up for itself, caring for its own, and building community out of something real.
That's the neighborhood we belong to. We're not just a shop in it — we want to be part of what makes it a place worth living in. Which means being excellent at what we do, being here when people need us, and treating every guest like they're exactly who this place was built for.
Because they are.
